Sondre's Holiday Patience

Sondre's Holiday Patience

The origins of WAX BBY can’t be told without a certain Norweigian singer-songwriter—Sondre Lerche. What started as a relationship based on fandom quickly morphed into a shared love of scented pleasure.

At the time, WAX BBY’s corporate status was simply just an extreme hobby. We had no wholesalers, no container supplies, branding that was cut into a rubber stamp and no money. When Sondre and the gang asked us to make 50 candles for their show at Bowery Ballroom, we jumped, leapt at the chance to develop a scent for one of our favorite musicians.

We ran to our neighborhood bar to collect their recycling so we could cut their discarded beer bottles into candle vessels. (after a few injuries, we did away with that practice). The scent notes Sondre gave to us were, make it smell like my grandfather's cabin—the one that burnt down in the woods in Norway. The smell of a fresh baked pie wafting from the old pine door of an arcadian dwelling? No - the embers of a childhood home set against the backdrop of a spruce forest in winter. The scent turned out to be such a hit (or maybe it was that Sondre’s devout fanbase) that we sold out the first night. And after that night and several Jack on the rocks - WAX BBY was born.

Fast-forward three years and one global pandemic later when Sondre emails us again with a new challenge—create a scent for his newest album Patience. A holiday scent but not a mulled wine, Christmas tree explosion (we’ve been there, poured that). Instead, one that is fresh, crisp and internationally beloved. We got to work mixing various combinations of citrus, pines, chilis and musks. Amidst several late nights at our studio with our Patience vinyl spinning on the record player, Sondre’s Holiday Patience was born.

Team WAX BBY fled the city one infamous weekend in November of 2020 to begin pouring the scent. From the confines of a secluded Victorian estate owned by a WAX BBY day 1 confidant, we put our Patience record on the turntable and got to work.

There was an unavoidable chaotic energy that comes with making 100 candles in your friend’s brand new kitchen, but we were transported to a place filled with freshly made wreaths, a bonfire and some citrus-laden Manhattans. The house was filled with golden hour sunlight, delicious scents rich enough to drink and champagne we actually did drink.

If you too want to escape to a place more serene than where you are right now, buy Sondre’s esteemed album, Patience, and the candle inspired by that very sound. Settle in—it’s going to be a long winter.
